Internationally Renowned Trumpeter, Educator & Mentor

Meet Professor Mark David

An international career in performance, conservatoire leadership, and mentorship has shaped a distinctive approach to preparing the next generation of professional trumpet players.

International Performance

A Lifetime at the Highest Level

For more than three decades, Mark David has performed with some of the world’s most distinguished orchestras, establishing an international reputation as one of Britain’s leading orchestral trumpeters.

His orchestral appointments have included Principal Trumpet with the Philharmonia Orchestra for more than twenty years, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and Opera North.

As Principal Trumpet with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, Mark has appeared as soloist throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and the United States. Recent highlights include performances of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in South Korea and China, together with tours featuring Copland’s Quiet City, Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 1, and the premiere of Alasdair Nicolson’s The Haunted Ebb.

He studied at the Birmingham School of Music with the late John Wilbraham before continuing his studies with Håkan Hardenberger, one of the world’s foremost trumpet soloists. Their influence continues to shape both his performing and his distinctive approach to teaching and developing emerging professionals.

It is this breadth of experience—performing with world-class orchestras, working with internationally renowned conductors, and helping young musicians realise their potential—that now informs Mark’s coaching of trumpet players preparing for professional careers.

His unique combination of international performing experience, conservatoire leadership, and innovative coaching philosophy provides an exceptional foundation for developing the leading players of tomorrow.

Inspiring excellence

International Educator, Mentor and Coach

From 2011 to 2026, Mark David served as Artistic Director and Head of Brass at the Royal Academy of Music in London, at the helm of one of the world’s most respected brass departments. Under his leadership, the department strengthened its international reputation for excellence, with graduates now performing as soloists, chamber musicians, and principal orchestral players across the world.

He continues his association with the Academy as the John Wilbraham Visiting Professor and, in 2022, was conferred the title of Professor of the University of London.

Although internationally recognised as a performer, Mark finds equal fulfilment in helping advanced trumpet players realise their professional ambitions. His approach combines individual tuition, bespoke residential clinics, and international masterclasses, informed by decades of experience in professional performance and conservatoire education.

He is also in demand as a guest clinician and has presented masterclasses throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia.

Beyond music, Mark has pursued endurance sport with the same commitment he brings to performance. Having completed the Marathon des Sables, multiple Ironman triathlons, and ultra-distance races, he brings the resilience, discipline, and mental focus developed through these challenges to his work with musicians. He is also a qualified Personal Trainer, Ski Instructor, and Mountain Bike Leader.

Few musicians combine an international performing career with leadership of one of the world’s foremost conservatoire brass departments. Mark David’s experience at the highest levels of performance and education gives him a rare understanding of what it takes to develop as a musician, navigate the demands of the profession, and build a successful and sustainable career.

A distinctive approach to coaching

The Guided Self-discovery Philosophy

Mark David has always considered coaching a natural extension of performing.

Throughout his career, he has been passionate about sharing what he has learned, while encouraging musicians to develop the understanding and independence to find their own path.

At the heart of his teaching is a philosophy of guided self-discovery. Rather than simply telling musicians what to do, Mark demonstrates, questions, and challenges them to discover the solutions for themselves. Recognising that every musician is different, he tailors his coaching to the individual rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

His approach is also shaped by experiences beyond music.

Skiing and endurance sport have reinforced his belief in purposeful practice, technical refinement, resilience, and the ability to perform under pressure—principles he applies directly to the demands of elite trumpet playing.

Mark works with ambitious trumpet players from around the world as they prepare for conservatoire entry, professional auditions, solo and orchestral performance, and long-term careers in music.

Private online and face-to-face coaching is available, together with bespoke residential clinics in the UK and internationally. Every programme is individually designed for musicians with serious professional ambitions.
